Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Click any question below to reveal detailed answers about discount calculations and savings strategies.
To calculate a percentage discount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. Subtract that result from the original price. For example, for a $100 product with a 20% discount: Discount = $100 × (20/100) = $20. Final Price = $100 - $20 = $80.
Stacked discounts occur when a store allows you to apply a second promo code or coupon on top of an already discounted store item. The second discount is applied to the already reduced price, not the original price. For instance, a 20% store discount plus an extra 10% coupon on a $100 item results in $80 first, then 10% off $80 ($8), giving a final price of $72 (total effective discount of 28%, not 30%).
In most jurisdictions, state and regional sales tax or VAT is calculated on the final discounted price rather than the original price. Our calculator automatically factors tax onto the post-discount subtotal so your estimated final checkout cost is accurate.
The effective discount rate represents the total net percentage you saved off the original retail price when multiple discounts or stacked promo codes are applied. It gives you the true overall savings metric across all combined reductions.
If you see an item on sale for $80 after a 20% discount and want to find its original list price, switch to Reverse Original Price mode. The formula divides the sale price by (1 - discount percentage/100): $80 ÷ (1 - 0.20) = $100.
