World Health Organization (WHO) BMI Classification

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening metric categorized by international clinical bodies to evaluate health risks correlated with body fat accumulation.

Classification BMI Range (kg/m²) Health Risk Profile Recommended Action
Underweight < 18.5 Nutritional deficiency, weakened immunity Increase nutrient-dense caloric intake
Normal Weight 18.5 – 24.9 Lowest risk for cardiovascular issues Maintain active lifestyle & balanced nutrition
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9 Moderate cardiovascular & metabolic risk Moderate calorie deficit & cardio routines

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Body Mass Index calculation and accuracy.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a standard mathematical screening calculation that assesses whether an individual has a healthy body weight in relation to their height. The metric formula is: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units, the formula is: BMI = [weight (lbs) ÷ height (in)²] × 703.
BMI does not directly differentiate between muscle mass and fat tissue. Because muscle is significantly denser than fat, muscular athletes, bodybuilders, and fitness enthusiasts may register in the "Overweight" or "Obese" categories despite having low body fat levels. For such individuals, body fat calipers, DEXA scans, or US Navy circumference methods provide a more complete assessment.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC, a standard healthy BMI for adult men and women ranges between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². Scores below 18.5 indicate underweight status, while scores between 25.0 and 29.9 denote overweight status, and 30.0 or above indicates obesity.
While the basic BMI calculation uses the same formula for all adults over age 20, women naturally carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI. In addition, older adults naturally lose lean muscle mass. For children and teens aged 2–19, BMI percentiles adjusted for exact age and biological sex are utilized.
Our tool implements the clinically validated Deurenberg Formula: Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − (10.8 × Gender) − 5.4 (where Gender = 1 for males and 0 for females). This offers a swift estimate without requiring caliper measurements.
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the baseline energy expenditure required by your vital organs to stay alive at rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) factors in your physical activity level and workouts on top of BMR to tell you how many total calories you burn in a single day.
Checking your BMI once every 2 to 4 weeks under consistent conditions (such as in the morning after waking up and before eating) is optimal. Daily fluctuations are typically due to water retention and digestion rather than actual fat or muscle tissue changes.
If your BMI is higher or lower than normal, consider tracking your caloric balance with our companion TDEE tool, incorporating moderate cardiovascular and resistance exercises 3-4 days a week, and consulting a certified dietitian or healthcare professional for a tailored nutrition plan.
